DEATH XII depicts the iconic rider in black armour from the Rider Waite-Smith tarot, a figure that is widely recognisable. But despite its intimidating visage, this character is not necessarily a harbinger of death itself. Rather, it is a reminder that life is perpetuated in change, and some things must “die” in order to be transformed. Like the tarot card, the drawing can be viewed upright and in reverse. The two maidens in Death’s grasp are a representation of acceptance and resistance, showing the inevitable and cyclical nature of Life and Death.
